Bridging the Gap: A Science-to-Society Event at Tekniska Museet Inspires a New Generation of Scientists

As we at AIMES consider the Science-to-Society dialog one of our main objectives, we gathered our researchers to organize a captivating event for children and their parents visiting Tekniska Museet in Stockholm during the recent November school break.  The museum’s vibrant and interactive environment served as the perfect backdrop for the researchers to engage with children and their families, fostering a sense of wonder and excitement about the world of science.

Scientist for a Day

One of the highlights of the event was the hands-on research exploration stations. Children had the opportunity to step into the shoes of a scientist for a day, with each station representing a different aspect of bioengineering. From how organ-on-chip technology, portable biosensors and antibiotics can help us to fight diseases, to how 3D printers, fluorescens and bioelectronics help scientists in their research.  Using age-appropriate language and engaging visuals, they demystified complex scientific concepts, making them accessible and intriguing for the young audience. This interactive approach not only entertained but also educated, as the researchers answered questions and explained the relevance of their work in everyday life.

Children had the chance to interact one-on-one with researchers, asking questions about their careers, their favorite discoveries, and what inspired them to pursue a life in science. This personal interaction allowed the children to see scientists as approachable role models, fostering a sense of relatability and encouragement.

Workshop in Science Communication

To meet the public takes skills and we decided to upgrade the communication skills of our students and research. It takes skills to explain the work that has been developed for years in a single minute, you really must focus on a scope, language, and message that you want to envoy. Therefor we decide to arrange workshop where Anna Birgersdotter, senior researcher, and lecturer in science entrepreneurship, convey her best practice in science communication.

Highlights

The Science-to-Society event at the Tekniska Museet proved to be a resounding success, creating an impactful bridge between researchers and the community. By making science accessible, interactive, and fun, the event succeeded in awakening the curiosity of young minds and fostering a deeper appreciation for bioengineering. As these children embark on their educational journeys, they carry with them the seeds of inspiration planted at this event, potentially blossoming into the scientists and innovators of tomorrow.

The funniest was the station with bacteria and especially getting to know what happens when the white blood cells run out, says Charlie Montén, visiting Stockholm from Ekdungeskolan in Linköping.

“I think the statin with the blood was the funniest. Because I liked blood, says Achille, who recently turned five.

The event proved to be a great success, and we are thankful for everybody that made it possible. From the children and their families, Tekniska Museet, our scientists and all other members of AIMES that contributed to turn our ambition to communicate science to the society a reality.
