New Master’s Students at AIMES

Warm Welcome to AIMES! Can you tell us shortly about yourself and your academic background?

Warm Welcome to AIMES Angela Ceballos Torres and Gabriela Gurau! Our new master’s students in Julia Rogal research group.

Can you tell us shortly about yourself and your academic background?

“I studied my bachelors on Biology at the National University of Colombia. I worked there at the Genetics Institute on research about neurodegenerative diseases. With this experience I got very interested in Neuroscience, which motivated me to study a masters in the field. I started my masters on “Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology” at Stockholm University in 2022. Now I am working on my master’s thesis at Anna Herland’s Lab, focused on cerebral organoids and Organ-on-Chip model,” says Angela.

Gabriela was born in Romania but moved to Italy as a child, and that is also where she studied.

“I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering at university of Pavia where I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in bioengineering: cells, tissues, and devices.”

What specific skills or knowledge you hope to gain during your time here at AIMES?

“I am looking forward on working with professionals of different fields and learn more from them about bioengineering, especially about materials and protocols for biomedical application not only in neuroscience but in other fields”, says Angela.

“Yes, I agree. And I also hope to improve my lab skills and develop new experimental abilities,” adds Gabriela.

Both Angela and Gabriela moved to Sweden to write their Master´s Thesis. Angela has been living in Sweden for one year now, whiles Gabriela moved here only a month ago.

So, what do they most like about living in Sweden?

“I love the vast number of natural parks there are for hiking or having a break from the city. Also, I like the “Fika” culture, is great for mingle and getting to know people better,” are Angelas favorite parts of living in Sweden. “I really appreciate the politeness of people and the fact that there are a lot of green spaces,” says Gabriela.

That sounds nice. I hope you will continue to enjoy your time in Sweden! Thank you for your time and good luck with your master’s thesis.
